Yarn: An Introduction
The software packaging system that was developed by Facebook in 2016 is called Yarn. This software packaging system was primarily designed for the Node.js JavaScript runtime environment, and Yarn provides stability, security and speed. This is also an alternative to the Node Package Manager, commonly referred to as npm. Yarn was also a collaborative effort on part of Google, Exponent, Tilde and Facebook to answer the problems faced regarding performance. Yarn would then be created to tackle security and consistency issues that arose within large codebases within Facebook. To review Yarn in this blog post, we will be covering the software packaging systems functionality, advantages and disadvantages, and its publishing packages.
Functionality
Yarn’s functionality is tied to its plug-in compatibilities, which allow it to extend its core-features and initiate better structured work-flows with its use. Its functionality is noted for allowing default plugins that are made available to all users, as well as user-created plugins which allows developers and programmers to add in their own plugin features. To review Yarn’s functionality features, we will now list some of the significant features that allow it to be a successful software packaging system.
Plugins

Yarn: Advantages and Disadvantages
There are many advantages in Yarn due to its functional core-features that allow developer driven modification. Some of these advantages include installing packages from local cache. This allows Yarn to not have to connect to networks that require installation from their separate cache’s. Yarn allows strongly binding of package versions, and also allows multiple packages to be installed simultaneously. This type of install, referred to as parallel install
is a big advantage of Yarn’s functionality with package management. Furthermore, Yarn installs packages in parallel while npm installs a package at a time, which gives it a speed advantage.
Although Yarn has a lot of significant advantages as a software packaging tool, some of its disadvantages include not having support for previous versions of Node.js. The EOL boundary for Yarn means that there are only certain versions that allow compatible function with regards to Node.js. Yarn also does not work properly on native modules, which can be a big disadvantage for developers and programmers that rely on them.
Publishing Packages
Publishing packages in Yarn means that developers and programmers can share packages with others around the world. This is made possible through the npm registry
, which allows global distribution of packages. A user must first create an npm account and login by using yarn login
on the command line. They can then publish components for npm packages. When all the code has been written for the package, the user can test it to make sure they are ready to publish. By typing yarn publish
in the command line, the code is then entered into your user repository and is ready for sharing across global servers.
